Stokes chosen by the Drama League for the
Distinguished Performance Award for 1998. The Drama League has been giving this award out since 1935, and only one actor or actress from the entire Broadway season receives it. Previous winners include: Helen Hayes, Alfred Lunt, Sir Alec Guiness, Sir John Gielgud, James Stewart, Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones, Glenn Close and Uta Hagen among others.

After nearly a 3-year journey of readings, workshops, and a cast album, Stokes finally opens RAGTIME on Broadway.

Stokes is nominated for the Los Angeles OVATION award for his performance as Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in "Ragtime".

September 22, 1997

Stokes receives Canada's DORA award as Best actor in a Musical for his performance as Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in the Toronto production of RAGTIME. The "Dora" is Canada's version of the "Tony" award. Unfortunately Stokes is not at the ceremony to accept the award because he is still performing RAGTIME at the Shubert theater in Los Angeles, but his award is graciously accepted by Mark Cassius, one of Stokes' Canadian cast mates from the original Toronto production.

September 23, 1997

Stokes has an interview and solo fashion shoot for Vanity Fair with photographer Sam Jones on the back lot of Paramount Pictures. This is set to appear in the December issue.

September 18, 1997

Tonight Show appearance with Jay Leno. Stokes performs "The Gettin' Ready Rag" with the ensemble from "Ragtime."

September 16, 1997

Stokes has a fashion shoot/interview for ELLE magazine with his Toronto/Broadway "Sarah," Audra McDonald. It is set to come out in the winter of 97.

August 12, 1997

1st recording session for Dreamworks' first animated feature "Prince of Egypt" which is the story of Moses. Stokes is the singing voice of "Jethro" in a big song/sequence called "Through Heaven's Eyes" that teaches Moses about his spirituality. The Music and Lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz and the orchestrations and score are by Hans Zimmer. Stokes says it looks like it will be "incredible." It is set for release in the fall of 1998.
