Z, via Yelp.com:
Improv--I know, I've seen those so called "comedy improv" shows, too. So I was reluctant to go... but I read about them in the Marin IJ and glad I did!

MARINPROV is fun live theater--only made up just for you. They are "San Francisco"-style improv, which means they focus on characters and story-- like a play or movie.

The venue is really nice. It's the Marin Arts Gallery, in a new building on 4th street, next to the court house. An art gallery by day, it features art by local Marin artists--and it's really good art. There are lots of restaurants within a block, from Joe's to Crepevine to Arismendi pizza--free parking--so easy to make a night of it! (Your tickets will cost less than the bridge toll and parking in SF!)

I've seen a couple shows now--brought friends--and they are always surprised and say, "That was really fun--great stories, I can't believe they made it up."

You can't--but they do--from audience suggestions (and you can scream out your suggestions, so you don't have to feel shy--or you can just sit there and let everyone else suggest things!)
The first half of the shows I've seen are short, funny sketches, like on Saturday Night Live, only funny. They even make up songs on the spot-- and do mini-musicals. One night I saw them make up an opera about the king of the ocean and his killer mermaid daughters--it was killer!

Intermission! They had two wines and some cookies, soft drinks and water, and that was nice. The wine was actually good, and so were the chocolate cookies (wine and chocolate, mmm).

The second half is like a short play or movie--one 45 minute story that goes from beginning to end--those really amaze me, because they just keep building like a movie--and you wonder, "How do they know what to do next?" It's kind of magic.

The shows I've seen also have a really good keyboard player who accompanies the singing, and adds background music, like in a movie.
The whole thing adds up to a night of fun, affordable live entertainment, something that can be hard to find in Marin.

Marinprov is a wonderful local live improv theater troupe. I have been to many of their shows and have enjoyed ALL of them! Each of the 6 troupe members bring their own style and experience, and the combination is delightful. Each show highlights their seasoned talents and provides a new and different experience each time.

The shows are laugh out loud funny and I have been known to find myself laughing days later. It is so wonderful to have this improv troupe here in Marin County. And, it is great to have the performances in an art gallery which provides a fun and intimate setting to enjoy the theater.

I highly recommend their live shows, especially if you love laughing...

I was lucky to be invited to attend the October improv show. I don't remember when I have laughed so hard. Their energy is huge and the dynamics between the players are bright and intense. Days later, I'm still remembering pieces of the different performances. Responses from some audience members made it even more enjoyable. I love it when someone simply can't stop laughing, it charges up the room and adds to the whole experience. This happened several times during the October performance. I hope I can make it to everything they do in the future.

This is my first review--because I'm really picky and I've never been inspired to review anything before!

But I saw the Marinprov show last Saturday and it was the most delightful piece of theater I've seen in years. Reminded me of the old Sid Caesar show (or if you're too young to remember that, Carol Burnett, or if you're too young to remember that, the early days of Saturday Night Live with Gilda and the funny ones).

There was never a dull moment--I was constantly surprised and delighted. I'm going to their next show!
