The PMN
in PMN Caecilia stands for Peter Matthias Noordzij. He designed this humanist
face in 1990. Serifa used to be my favorite slab-serif face, but now Caecilia
is for several reasons. First: it has beautiful character shapes that are
less regular and geometric. Second: It has true italics and since
I believe that italics are the perfect typographic choice for emphasis (because
bold is too much), I prefer true italics to Serifa's Obliques. It also comes
in many weights, numbered like Frutiger's faces, from 45 Light to 85 Heavy.
Finally, it comes with true old-style figures and even small caps.
The end result is a very modern typeface with a classical feeling. the slab
serifs make it a wonderful face for faxing (and these days much of my own
communications are electronic--either e-mail, where we currently have no
choice of typefaces--sigh--or fax).
