Giambattista Bodoni of Parma, Italy (also famous for its ham) designed his typefaces at the end of the 1700's. Bodoni was revolutionary because it had much sharper shapes, more contrast such as bolder stems and hairlines. That's why it's called a modern typeface even though it's 300 years old.

Because Bodoni is such a classic face, there are countless variations of it. This is Morris Fuller Benton's interpretation from between 1908 and 1915--it's less severe than other Bodonis. Some versions such as Bauer Bodoni, are extremely beautiful, but extremely delicate and difficult to print.

The newest version is ITC's Bodoni, a face that is probably closest to the Bodoni's original than any other. ITC's new version is unique in that it includes three different versions, one for fine print, one for body text and one for headlines. All are specifically designed for the differences in sizes--just as Mr. B's original fonts were. ITC's Bodoni was designed as a Multiple Master font, but is currently only available standard Type 1 format.
